Summer Vacation Planning Tips
Planning a summer vacation is always exciting, and it can be just as fun when traveling with loved ones with special needs. You can ensure everyone has a fantastic time with some preparation and creativity. The following tips will help you make your summer getaway (or staycation) smooth, fun, and inclusive for all.
- Choose the Right Destination: Look for places that are accessible and inclusive. Many resorts, national parks, and cities have special accommodations and activities for people with disabilities. Places with accessible rides and activities are fantastic options. Familiarize yourself with the surroundings and pinpoint medical providers in the area if an emergency arises.
Enjoy Utah’s national parks with the America the Beautiful Access Pass (Free for your loved one with a permanent disability (does not have to be a 100% disability) – that provides access to more than 2,000 recreation sites.
- Planning Ahead: Research your destination thoroughly. Check for accessible accommodations, transportation, and attractions. Ask your friends and community members for feedback. Call ahead to confirm details and ask any questions you might have. It’s always better to be prepared!
- Pack Smart: Make a checklist of all necessary items. This might include medications, medical equipment, and any special food. Bring extra supplies in case of delays or emergencies. - Travel Comfortably: Choose the best mode of transportation for your loved one. If flying, inform the airline about your needs ahead of time. For road trips, plan for regular breaks to stretch and rest. Put together packs with age-appropriate activities your family will enjoy during longer road trips.
- Consider a Travel Buddy: Sometimes, having extra hands can be a big help. Whether it’s a friend, relative, or professional caregiver, a travel buddy can provide additional support and make the trip more enjoyable for everyone.
- Be Flexible: Things might not always go as planned, and that’s okay! Keep a positive attitude and be ready to adjust your plans as needed. The most important thing is to enjoy the time together.
- Choose Activities: Involve all your family in the process. Look for sensory-friendly events, adaptive sports, and accessible tours. Having a mix of relaxing and fun activities ensures there’s something for everyone. For instance, balance a day of exploring with a quiet evening at the hotel or rental. Include activities like swimming in an accessible pool, visiting an inclusive playground, or enjoying a picnic in a beautiful, accessible park.
- Consider a Staycation: If traveling seems too overwhelming, why not enjoy a staycation? Explore local attractions that you may have overlooked. Many cities have accessible parks, museums, and community centers with special programs. Plan fun activities at home, like a movie night, backyard camping, or a themed dinner. A staycation can be just as fun and relaxing, offering a great way to bond and create wonderful memories without the stress of traveling. Download the Utah Parent Center’s Summer Resource Guide.
- Make Memories: Capture the moments! Take lots of photos and videos to remember the fun times. Ask the little ones to make drawings or to collect objects to use as a reminder of their experiences. These memories will be cherished long after the vacation ends.
With a little planning, collaboration, and a lot of love, your summer vacation can be a wonderful experience for everyone. Happy Summer!
