Dyslexia Handbook Release: A Guide to Strengthening Literacy Skills
The Special Education Department is excited to share that the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) has released an updated guide called The Dyslexia Handbook: Guidance for Effective Literacy Instruction for General Education and Special Education. This handbook is designed to help parents, educators, and school staff work together to support students—especially those who struggle with dyslexia.
What is the Dyslexia Handbook?
This handbook provides helpful, research-based information on how to support students with reading challenges. It includes guidance on:
- Effective reading instruction and interventions
- How to identify and assess reading difficulties
- Resources for both general and special education
The goal is to improve reading skills and provide the right support for every student, especially those with dyslexia.
Why Early and Evidence-Based Reading Instruction Matters
The Utah State Board of Education believes that every child deserves high-quality reading instruction. When students receive the right support early, they are more likely to succeed in school and feel a stronger sense of belonging. Using proven teaching methods is especially important for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning challenges.
This updated handbook is a valuable resource to help families and schools work together to ensure all students receive the support they need to thrive.
