Raising Awareness of Developmental Disabilities
Every year in March, we celebrate National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This month is a time to learn more about developmental disabilities. It is also a time to include people with developmental disabilities in our communities. Developmental disabilities impact the way a person’s body or brain develops. This can make it hard to learn, communicate, or do daily activities.
Some examples of developmental disabilities are intellectual disabilities, autism, and cerebral palsy. People are born with developmental disabilities or they happen early in life. People with developmental disabilities may need extra help and support. With the right services, people with developmental disabilities can live good lives as part of their community. This month, we celebrate the many talents of people with developmental disabilities like Collette Divitto, an entrepreneur with Down syndrome who created her own cookie business. We, at the Utah Parent Center work to remove barriers so everyone can take part in their community.
