ACT Accommodation Requests
As ACT testing deadlines get closer, now is the time for families of students with disabilities to take action—especially if your student will need testing accommodations. Planning ahead can make the process smoother and help reduce stress for both you and your student.
Why This Matters
ACT testing accommodations must be approved before test day. If requests are late or incomplete, your student may not be able to test with the supports they need.
What Families Need to Know
-
Schools submit all ACT accommodation requests
Parents and students cannot submit requests directly to ACT. Your student’s school must handle the process. -
Approval is required before testing
Accommodations must be reviewed and approved by ACT prior to the test date. -
Accommodations must match current supports
ACT bases decisions on the accommodations your student already receives in school (IEP, 504 Plan, or documented classroom supports).
Important Note for Families:
While ACT offers national test dates and deadlines, many Utah schools also administer the ACT on school-specific dates. Testing calendars and accommodation timelines can vary by district and school. Always reach out to your school’s LEA, counselor, or testing coordinator to confirm local deadlines.
Who to Work With at School
Start the conversation early with:
-
Special education teachers or case managers
-
School counselors
-
LEA or testing coordinators
They will help gather and submit the correct documentation on your student’s behalf.
How Parents Can Help
Even though you don’t submit the request, you play an important role:
-
Review your student’s IEP or 504 Plan to confirm accommodations are clearly documented
-
Ask about school and ACT deadlines
-
Follow up to ensure paperwork is submitted on time
-
Speak up early if your student’s needs have changed
