Identifying Strengths for Employment
Knowing what you are good at and what you enjoy can help you when you are trying to decide what kind of work may interest you. Everyone is unique. Everyone has certain talents they are born with, meaning they may be naturally good at certain tasks. However, no one is good at everything. For that reason, we all have areas where we can set goals and attempt to improve our performance. The more we practice a task, the better we will become at doing that task. Transition University’s Youth Workbook, Successful Transitions for Youth with Disabilities, can guide you in this process. Use the following pages of the workbook to help you identify who you are, your strengths, what you like to do, where you are comfortable and what skills you have already mastered. Review these pages with a friend or family member to see if you can identify what type of job or community activity aligns with your interests and strengths. Depending upon the outcome, you may also be able to identify areas where you can set goals to help you gain additional skills in your daily life or help you move towards employment.
