S.M.A.R.T Goals
June is a good time to stop and look at the progress you have made on the goals you set for this year. Hopefully, the goals you set were SMART – specific, meaningful, attainable/achievable, realistic/relevant, and time-bound.
You can make SMART goals better by turning them into SMARTER goals. You do this when you:
- E – Evaluate the goal regularly. Regular, even daily, check-ins will keep you mindful of what you are working on and make progress more likely.
- R – Readjust your method if needed. As you regularly evaluate your goal, you may find that what you are doing isn’t working. This doesn’t mean you need to remove that goal in favor of a new one, but maybe change your approach. For example, if the goal is to practice a skill for 30 minutes a day and you find that you are rarely hitting the 30-minute mark, break it into three 10-minute segments, or six 5-minute segments. Changing the method may help you get closer to achieving the goal.
