Autism Research Project “SPARK”
What is SPARK?
The SPARK for Autism Study is an ongoing and free research project in which families can participate. It is one of the largest efforts in the United States to collect genetic information to help with autism research. The study’s goal is to understand autism better and find ways to improve the lives of people with autism. By gathering important data from families, scientists can learn more about what causes autism and how to support those affected.
SPARK will drive progress in two significant ways.
- First, by collecting genetic samples from 50,000 families, researchers will gain a much deeper understanding of the genetic factors that play a role in autism.
- Second, families participating in SPARK will have the opportunity to be invited to join additional studies, helping to accelerate the launch of various research projects and advancing the field more rapidly.
Why Are Utah Families Participating?
In Utah, many families are joining the SPARK study, contributing to this important research. Autism is a condition that affects how a person thinks, learns, and interacts with others. People with autism may find it challenging to communicate or understand social situations, but they may also have special interests and talents. Through the SPARK study, scientists are looking closely at autism, using tools like genetic testing to understand it more deeply.
Families participating in the study provide key information, like medical histories and answers to surveys. Their involvement helps researchers identify patterns in autism. In Utah, where there is a large community of families affected by autism, the SPARK study is playing a vital role in advancing our knowledge of the condition.
- By learning more about the causes of autism, researchers hope to add valuable scientific insights into potential treatments and actions that might prevent issues that are common in ASD. Some of these issues may be digestive problems including constipation, or neurological conditions such as seizures.
- By participating in SPARK, families are helping to create a future where autism is better understood, and individuals with autism receive the support they need to thrive. Join SPARK and the University of Utah!
