Bleeding and Clotting Disorders

Hemophilia and other bleeding disorders cause prolonged bleeding due to clotting issues. With proper care, those affected can live healthy lives. Talk to a specialist if you suspect a bleeding disorder.

What are Bleeding and Clotting Disorders?

Hemophilia A and B and von Willebrand Disease are inherited bleeding disorders that keep blood from clotting properly. These conditions are characterized by excessive bleeding due to a deficiency or abnormality in clotting factors or platelets. Uncontrolled bleeding is serious when left untreated.

Common symptoms of a bleeding disorder can include excessive frequent nosebleeds, prolonged bleeding from cuts, easy bruising, prolonged bleeding with injury or surgery, heavy prolonged menstruation, and bleeding in joints and muscles, sometimes without any known cause. It is important to remember individuals with bleeding disorders do not bleed faster but longer and will need medication to stop the bleeding.

Bleeding disorders can range from mild to severe. Regardless of the severity, a bleeding disorder diagnosis, like any other chronic condition, can be challenging to navigate. However, it is important to know that people living with a bleeding disorder can lead a healthy and full life with proper care and support. Whether you are newly diagnosed or a parent of a newly diagnosed child, knowing what resources are available to you will be critical as you navigate this diagnosis successfully.

If you think you might have a bleeding disorder, talk to your doctor about meeting with an expert. Bleeding Disorder Clinics or Hemophilia Treatments Centers have hematologists that specialize in bleeding disorders and can provide the guidance and treatments you need to live a healthy and active life.
