Children’s Hearing Aid Program (CHAP)
Does your child need hearing aids but insurance doesn’t cover them?
The Children’s Hearing Aid Program (CHAP) may be able to help. CHAP was created to help families purchase their child’s first set of hearing aids so that infants and toddlers wouldn’t have to wait to hear and also to give families the chance to start saving for their child’s next set of hearing aids. CHAP recently increased the age limit so that all eligible children from 0 through 17 years of age can now apply.
What does CHAP cover?
- One set of hearing aid
- Earmolds or softbands for the first 3 years
What are the eligibility requirements?
- Must live in Utah
- Have a hearing loss that was diagnosed by an audiologist
- Is younger than 18 years old
- Cannot be eligible to receive hearing aids through Utah’s Medicaid program
- Cannot have insurance coverage for hearing aids
- Meets CHAP’s financial need qualification criteria
How do I apply?
- Your pediatric audiologist will work with you in applying. Application forms and further information can be found at familyhealth.utah.gov/chap.
What if we already used CHAP and the hearing aids no longer work?
- If your child has already received a set of hearing aids through CHAP but they are no longer working and you are unable to purchase another set, you can apply for the Hearing Aid Recycling Program (HARP). HARP refurbishes donated hearing aids which are then available to eligible children at no cost.
