IEP Prep Guide: Preschool to Kindergarten

When students with disabilities move from Early Childhood Special Education services into kindergarten, it’s an exciting and significant transition. Planning with your child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team can ensure success. Key steps include:

  1. Start Early: Begin discussions with your child’s IEP team at least one year before kindergarten.
  2. Explore Options: Consider school choices in the spring before enrollment.
  3. Prepare for the Transition: Engage your child in readiness activities during the summer.
  4. Stay Involved: As a parent, you are part of your student’s IEP team and planning process. Communicate openly with your IEP team by discussing your student’s strengths and challenges.

Consider this checklist as you begin the transition planning process to Kindergarten with your IEP teams.
